ALDERNEY FESTIVAL 2010

Update 31st August:

Some of you would have heard the news that last month Richard McCarthy, Guernsey lost his short and harsh battle with cancer. Richard had recently fished the festival on a few occasions but many of his friends have been more frequent visitors to the island over a longer period, always encouraging him to come up, which of course in the end he did. In his memory Richards wife Sue has decided she would like to dedicate a trophy. The trophy will be known as the 'Richard McCarthy Memorial Trophy' and will be for a new category. The category is close to Richard and Sue's hearts and will therefore be for the 'Heaviest Fish Returned Alive'.

Hopefully this category will encourage anglers to keep fish not for the table alive. For that purpose we will have aerators in stock available at cost price this year plus the batteries. It goes without saying the handling of fish intended for release is critical. Handle the shoulder area and the back of the head only, avoiding the stomach area. If it is necessary to lay the fish on the floor then try to use a softer area or a fish unhooking mat. At night keep the aerated bucket in the dark away from your work area where you are using your headlights. All this will help your retained fish every chance of swimming away.

Bait orders are slow to come in, critical for live bait but also we need your frozen bait order so as we have time to order it and get it here, sometimes a wee bit of a logistical nightmare if we're not organised. Thanks guys. Not long now...............

This years Festival is 2nd October till 9th October with a midday start and finish on both days. The booklet is in the process of being printed so hopefully next month you will receive that along with entry forms. One or two changes and additions to take place which can be made known here. If you have never fished before and want to find out more, or indeed not fished for a number of years and do not receive entry forms, then please do get in touch with your address details and we will post out to you. Contact mark@alderneyangling.com or 01481 824884.

The big news is that this year there will be a £2000 cash prize paid out to any British Record caught that is on the Alderney Festival species list. 1 payout only so multiple claims (if we're that lucky!) will split the prize. That is in addition to the £500 paid out for the Alderney Record broken which seems to happen most years. Only one prize paid to one fish though.

The qualifying weights for the festival are always finalised last minute so the Committee can take in to account how the season is fishing so as the Festival remains conservation minded. However at this point it looks as if the following species will have there qualifying weights reviewed and these have been proposed:

Black Bream 2lb 12oz

Gilthead Bream 2lb 12oz

Red Mullet 1lb 12oz

Dover/Common Sole 2lb

Triggerfish 2lb

Ballan Wrasse 5lb 12oz

Cuckoo Wrasse 1lb

I must stress though that this is not finalised.

Huelin Renouf are currently in the process of setting up shipping links with Alderney on a twice weekly service from Southampton and Jersey. This will no doubt enable more anglers to bring their cars over here from these destinations and the twice weekly service means that you're not without your car as long. Huelin Renouf will also be sponsors of the Festival which is excellent news. To find out more you can ring Alison on 01481  824040 for costs and travel times.

Three Bearded Rockling have always been a bit controversial in the Festival as they are regarded as a mini species yet they are frequently caught over 1lb. The Committee have decided that they do want the species to count in the 2011 Festival but of course we need time to get a reasonable Alderney record together so for the 2010 Festival there is an optional pool (The Rock Pool) of £1 with a 100% payout to the biggest fish so anglers are encouraged to fish for them. Subject to it not being broken following the festival it is likely this will form the basis for 2011 in the Under 5lb category.
