26th March

One of the biggest Carp that has came out of Corbletts quarry was caught by Norman Butel this morning. Fishing alone he managed to land it after a few scares and estimated the fish to weigh around 16lb, absolute corking fish which was caught on float fished worm. Hopefully there will be more to come as more people start to fish the quarry.

I had a crack in the dinghy last night around the harbour for a Small Eyed. None showed up, too many edibles snaffling the baits but did manage a nice Pollack.

We're off on holiday now for three weeks, shop and mail order though still being manned but reports on this page won't be happening, however we will be updating our Facebook page IF we have any successful fishing trips!!

23rd March

There's not much fishing going on in Alderney at the moment so here is something to read instead! With the Cod and Pollack season around the corner Boat Fishing Monthly profiled our lures in this months edition.

I've just got this innovative little product in to stock which has won a few awards for its concept and design. I've not yet used it but if you are like me when you have baited up on a cold, damp night with bait slime on your hands when you've not wiped them well enough on your rag, you need that big cast and the spool slips under load and hey presto it only goes half the distance and in the wrong direction. well this has got to be worth a go:

SPOOL STOP - Our Price £7.99  UK Price £7.99 RRP £9.74

If you’ve ever experienced your thumb slipping on the spool of a multiplier reel when casting then this neat device will help you get a grip. Simply fix the device on the rod where you want it, add the thumb pad and you now have a firm grip of the spool. It will also protect your thumb from line burns and cuts from leader knots when line leaves the spool at high speed. Full instructions are included and you get three thumb pads, but they can also be purchased separately. For more information look at www.spoolstop.com.

Thumb Pads Our Price £1.49  UK Price £1.49 RRP £1.80

I've stuck it on our Accessory page in our Mail Order section.

I was fortunate enough to get afloat the weekend and being such a small tide we opted to anchor for a Ray. It never paid off despite a nice day for it. Maybe too early as things were perfect for us, all we managed were 8 or 9 Dogfish and one Pollack.

We have just taken delivery of a load of 210mm Red gills that are already or maybe discontinued. I have put them on eBay at less than half RRP so to pick up a bargain of these popular lures look here.

12th March

Quick little session last night having a go for that elusive three bearded rockling for my species hunt. No luck there but had 7 shore rockling. On the other rod did ok with a mix of Bass, Pollack and Bream. Beautiful night to be out!!

9th March

Good news if you enjoy saving money. We have just taken delivery of a huge amount of Stren braid which we are selling on at knock down prices. 125 yard spools that retail at £14.99 we are doing those at £5.99! 300 yard spools we are selling at £11.99, they RRP at £39.99 and 1100 yard spools which retail at £99.99 we are doing for £34.99 and £39.99. Take a look here for more details Stren Microfuse.  If you want order quickly they are on eBay too, search for them under my user name of markharding1.

Not much happening fishing wise. No one has really been out and about. Cold NE winds have just finished so maybe I could venture out......................!

4th March

We now have a Headlamp page in our Mail Order section but here is the link.

A quick session the night before yielded a mix of Bass, Pout, Poor Cod and Dogfish. I did drop a reasonable fish, felt like a Huss. Cold NE winds putting off going out at the mo. No one else fishing so not much to report.

1st March

Fantastic video showing off the swimming action of the following lures on planetseafishing, the dying minnow looks great at around 4m 50 secs, the sandeels are on 6m 40 secs followed by the Cutbaits. Take a look here

Reports of one or two Sole about, not big though but different nonetheless.

28th February

Alderney Angling is now on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Alderney-Angling/191364870884448?sk=wall. Hopefully I'll work out how to put the 'like this' tab sooner or later.

Tides are small at the moment so fishing not great, dark nights and building springs this week though so I'll be out most nights.

24th February

Species update........................I've gone backwards!! http://www.alderneyangling.com/species_hunt_2011.htm

22nd February

Not a lot of fishing happening which is typical for this time of year, bottom species with the exception of Bass have thinned out now but eyes are always around for one or two shoals of Mullet. If you read these reports regularly you know they have been coming and not really hanging around. Last week though some did which resulted in some good angling for the few that knew. Dicky Smith had the best session landing 7 in very quick succession, all reasonable fish around 4lb to 5lb. Matt Smith was in on the act too with a few, eventually they managed to tell me as well and I got one to go along with my species hunt which has been updated here. Job done for those I'll probably won't target another now! Even Matt's mum Sue picked up a rod, first time in a long while and managed a personal best of 4lb 7oz.

10th February

Last night saw me with my mate Gary having a go on the Breakwater for a Ray. A slow start prompted a move further along when first cast I had a Bass. Only small at around 2lb, a couple of Pout followed by a mega shoal of Bream which parked up in front of us for two frenetic hours of action. We were getting double shots on pennel rigs!! Best fish was short of 3lb but I am sure I lost a bigger one as one of my rigs was a wishbone which snapped on the wishbone itself. It then quietened off which was good because it meant we could concentrate on the Ray. We needed to keep an eye on the swell as it was picking up but had to call it a day by 11.00pm, two hours before we planned to finish. On picking up his rod on the last retrieve Gary struck in to a good fish, Ray on!! I was scrambling to pack the gear away aware that the swell could be a problem and not knowing how long Gary needed to play the ray out when after 90 seconds or so the hooks pulled. Gutted!

Photo below is an average stamp of the Bream we were getting.

Elsewhere there wasn't a lot else caught despite half a dozen anglers out and about. Mullet once again spotted in the harbour, hopefully they'll arrive and stay in some numbers soon. Looking for flat days now too so we can venture out to the wrecks on Colin Dukes' Smuggler which is available for charter.

9th February

Fishing is still ticking  along. One local rod last night went onto a beach mark and managed four Bass and bits. I went to target a Small Eyed and finished up with a plump 3lb codling. That's my first ever shore caught one in Alderney, happy days and species number 22 for the year so far!! That's two consecutive trips now where I have caught my first Alderney species, part of the attraction of doing the species hunt for 2011!!

4th February

All week I have been trying to force my way out the door, I've got in to that idle mode of finding excuses not to go fishing as opposed to going and working late when I don't have too. Anyway I broke the mould yesterday with a gale 8 forecasted, muppet! I isolated myself on a rock mark at low tide so there was no running home without a 500 yard swim once the tide had come in! It paid off big time, I got two of my target species for the species hunt I set myself this year and a smattering of Bass to 5lb, I also dropped a bigger one in the huge swell as my leader knot tangled in with my other rod on the retrieve. I shouldn't shout but also had a PB shore caught Pout of 1lb 9oz. I finished with Red Mullet, Pout, Poor Cod, Pollack to 4lb, Bass to 5lb and 5 Bearded Rockling which was my first in Alderney. I've updated my species page too, 21 now for the year to date, all shore caught.   http://www.alderneyangling.com/species_hunt_2011.htm

26th January

Couldn't resist another session before the weather turns bad for a few days. Different venue but much the same as the night before except for more Pollack and a Smoothound. Elsewhere some big shoals of big Mullet have been sighted, loads of Dolphins and Seals invading the island too so there must be some big shoals of fish out there close by, shame these Easterlies are about to disperse those fish but hopefully when it calms down they'll feed close to shore. Some Sole caught last night too.

25th January

Last night was spent fishing down at the base of the cliffs on the south side last night. A glorious night, calm, warm, absolutely lovely. Fishing wasn't great but fairly busy with Dogfish, Poor Cods as many and as big as I have ever seen, Pout and Pollack. Enough to keep me interested but nothing to shout about, just brilliant being out there.

24th January NEW ALDERNEY SHORE RECORD CAUGHT!!

Bristol lads Dean, Dale, Paul and Mark are on their way home today after spending a week here. As reported previously the fishing wasn't the best but it did pick up towards the end of the week for the night time species as the tides peaked. The real cream of it was that Dale Britton caught an Alderney shore record in the form of a 9lb 7oz 12dr TURBOT!! Yes a Turbot!! In Dales words it was the best fish he has caught here in 10 years of fishing in Alderney, phenomenal and I say credit to the lads for sticking with it. Last night they managed some good fishing too. Bull Huss to 10lb 2oz (best fish falling to Dale), Dean Morgan managed a Bass of 8lb 10oz as well plus they had Smoothounds amongst there other fish. For the week they had Turbot, Bass, Plaice, Black Bream, Conger Eel, Huss, Smuts, LSD, Red Mullet, Pollack, Rockling, Pout, Wrasse and Smelt.

Pictures below of some of their fish and one of Dean post Turbot celebration, oh yes as soon as that was landed they were off to the Alderney pubs and got mullered!!

21st January

Added a Smelt for my species hunt, number 19.

A few little bits being caught by the Bristol lads that are over. Small Conger, a couple of 4lb plus Wrasse, Red Mullet, Pollack to 4lb, and a couple of Plaice.

20th January

Just a little update here http://www.alderneyangling.com/species_hunt_2011.htm  :-)

17th January

Full moon and its quiet other than some Mullet mooching around the harbour, some big fish reported have been seen, just need some anglers to target them now. One fish I did forget to mention was a cracking Bull Huss caught by Dick Smith on the last set of dark tides, he did in fact have two but the best one went 12lb 14oz, a beauty.

Last night I drowned some already dead worms on Platte Saline for a 5 Bearded Rockling to add to my species list. Almost like fishing in daylight the moon was so bright, not ideal for here and not ideal it proved to be. My only bite of the night was on the last cast due to the shortage of bait which turned out to be a spawned out Bass of around 1lb 10oz I would say.

11th January

Its late notice and few of you are likely to get this in time but tonight on Channel 4 is Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstalls first programme Hugh's Fish Fight which is on for three nights. It highlights discards of commercial fishermen and many other aspects of how our seas are  badly legislated for which are meant to protect fish stocks but don't, all part of Channel 4's Big Fish Fight series. If you haven't signed up for it neither then click on the link here  http://www.fishfight.net/index.html

8th January

New year, new start and fishing is pretty poor to say the least. I have had several trips this week and thought I'd be fishing for Bass, Red Mullet and Sole but nothing like it. Having to work hard for what we are catching. You'll get a rough idea from this link Species Hunt 2011 as to what I've been doing. I have challenged myself to get 50 species from Alderney this year, never done it before so we'll see how it goes. Other anglers have caught the odd Bass, a few Mullet and Rob Blondin on his first trip out for the year caught a Small Eyed Ray first cast (I have had 3 sessions for them including two 4.30am starts, jammy git!!).. Sorry Rob, well done mate! Tides dropping away next week and not expecting too much but you never know?
