25th September

Sport a little slow from the shore, Black bream aren't around in the same numbers as normal but fish to 4lb are being found. Couches Bream about during daylight with fish around the 1lb mark regularly reported. Those Tope I mentioned in a previous report don't appear to have come to anything with no reports of fish, bite offs etc. A couple of Small Eyeds reported from one of the sand marks on the island. Bass to baits and plugs. Mullet in reasonable numbers to around 4lb odd.

Some great Bass fishing just off the island in the boats with fish to 9lb being reported regularly. A good morning was had on the flatfish down the Schole yesterday so they appear to be around in good numbers, and I have also heard of Gurnards, Bream, Tope and Blondes all being boated.

13th September

Some reasonable reports of sport from the shore. It seems we've come off those massive tides and we have an improvement. I have heard of a couple of Tope from the Breakwater albeit one very small. Bull Huss to 11lb have been caught, quite a few Bass have been taken on baits to 6lb 8oz, Wrasse to 5lb, Bream to over 4lb and plenty of Golden Grey Mullet about. Its looking good.

In the boat there is plenty of Bass about, a few Turbot and Brill, some good Ray, Tope, Huss and Bream although these seem small .................. maybe the anglers have taken them all!!

I'm off the island for a week so emails won't be answered, the shop is open though but mornings only.

9th September

Reports of Tope very close to shore on both sides of the island in the boats, not great numbers but a few reported nonetheless. Also the normal mix of Bass, Brill and Turbot. A couple of codling reported too which was nice to hear about. I got out Wednesday which I can't report accurately as it will be part of a feature going in the next issue of Sea Angling News and it seems pointless reporting it here and then you reading it there but we had Bass, Bull Huss, Tope...............telling you too much!

From the shore, as I mentioned I do think there is a good possibility of Tope if they were targeted. There has been Black and Couches bream caught along with Bass to 6lb on baits. Bass are coming out on plugs more frequently too. Mullet to 5lb have been caught in good numbers, one angler managed 6 in a couple of hours and lost 4.

5th September

Hoorah.........we're back to normal, time to doz in front of the computer and go fishing again. July and August was unbelievably hectic but now hopefully I'll be able to update this page a bit more regularly.

Not much to report from the shore though. A group of anglers have just returned from Burhou with very little reward for their efforts, a few Bull Huss, Bream and Mullet seemed to account for the three days they were there. On Alderney shorelines it is similar but without the Bull Huss. Some Bass coming out to plugs as well, more prolific than of late. However the lack of fish is about to change, lots of anglers polishing their gear down getting ready for their annual sorties. I'm looking forward to see what is really there, I'll keep you posted.

Out in the boats there are plenty of flatfish, a 50/50 mix between Turbot and Brill. Alderney Felix had 20 or so yesterday along with other bits and pieces. Plenty of Bass showing too on some marks. I gave my boat a blitz yesterday, filthy dirty though where it hasn't been used so I'm really looking forward to getting back out, can't wait!

25th August

Hi, I'm still here, nearly burnt out. Sorry about the lack of updates but it has been a busy busy summer and if you've been a part of that then many thanks to you. First of all does anyone know Chris Grosvenor, if so tell him to get in touch if he could. I have a friend of his who is trying to get in touch with him.

With my friends united bit done fishing wise it has been ok. Sport from the Breakwater on the float and spinning gear is still picking up Garfish, Mackerel and Pollack, most of it a good size but a lot of the smaller Pollack have now moved in. Plenty of Bass have been reported on the NE corner of the island, this part of the island is normally bombed out with holiday makers and campers at this time of year and it appears that the local anglers leave it alone which is a shame because in the three years I have been here it has fished well for Bass during August. On the bottom, baits seem a bit quiet, the Bream that you would have thought would continue to make a showing seem very slow, Bass have shown but not much else.

In the boats though it is going really well. Plenty of Flats, so after the slow start they appear to be in good numbers, plenty of small fish in amongst the bigger stuff so it seems to indicate that next years fishing looks as if it could be good. Good numbers of Bass showing to 13lb, Bream are showing better on the ground with several fish over 4lb reported. The odd ray to 30lb too which come out at slack water as the baits slow up  on the drift. Good fishing on the wrecks too. Plenty of eels in the Channel on the rougher marks.

Have a quick peak at the Alderney Festival page if you are coming over, prices and availability of bait is on there.

12th August

We've just come out of Alderney Week with 7 days of fun and extravaganza, we've been absolutely run of our feet hence why no reports on this page. Fishing wise from the shore on the float and spinners has been quite good. On my guided sessions or teach ins with the holiday makers and kids we have had plenty of Garfish, plenty of Pollack to 4lb 8oz, plenty of chunky Mackerel and some Bass. There has been a lot of Bass reported seen in the surf amongst bathers in Arch Bay and the whole surrounding area has been producing Bass even to the anglers using feathers. Best fish up around the 5lb 8oz mark. I've not heard of any Bream of late, nor Sole and there has been a few goes for them. Plenty of Scad in the harbour.

Out in the boats the Bass seem a plenty with good reports of fish to 8lb 8oz from one of the Weymouth boats. There is still a few flats about, they seem to be running longer than normal but they were late starting, remember back in March and April they were pretty thin on the ground. Brill particularly seem to be in good numbers on both sides of the island. All the other bits are there as you would expect.

My own fishing has been severely curtailed because of the time of year, hopefully next Sunday we'll be back out there. Not sure what to do though with so many choices, Bass, Bream, reef Conger and Ling, Sharking or the flatfish. I'm sure this week I'll make my mind up!

I have some ABU AMBASSADEUR 7000 Narrow Spools for £75, ABU AMBASSADEUR 7000 CS Pro Rockets for £75, and ABU AMBASSADEUR 7000 BIG GAME for £75.

1st August

Boat sport being spoilt by the weather, shore sport poor...............bet you wished you never logged on now!! Its all the normal things you would expect, float fishing for Pollack, Gars and Wrasse, plugging for Bass, the good sign is there is a few Black bream showing around the harbour and quite a few Couches about too. Maybe we're in for a good autumn on the baits. A few Gurnards too around.

For those that are interested on the festival there is a little note for your attention as regards to car transport, its a little easier to get one over. Cheers for now.

27th July

I can't believe where the time is going, absolutely flat out every day and night at the moment, it is that time of year again, work hard, play hard!

Shore sport not as good as last year but we're getting a few bits. Pollacking, Garfish, Mackerel all slower than 2005 but still enough around so don't be disappointed. Frank Cusado had a cracking Pollack from the Breakwater of 6lb 9oz, and I also heard whispers of one over 7lb. The Bass fishing as you've read before has improved on how the year has been, you can get the plugs out now in confidence. On the bottom we have had Couches and Black Bream showing, odd Sole and some Bass coming out on the larger baits, however if more baits were legered rather than float fished everywhere I am sure we would see better fishing.

In the harbour from the moorings there have been both types of Bream mentioned, very good sized Bass, Pollack, Mullet, Wrasse, Scad, Mackerel and Garfish.

The last few days we have had the pleasure of the River Cottage film crew and of course Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and Nick Fisher. They have been filming and eating different fish from around the island but the bit where I was involved was Mullet fishing from the shore. Not a great choice for me this so I enlisted the help of Dick Smith who is nothing short of an expert. In each of his trips leading up to the filmed one he caught Mullet, I even went on one with him and landed one plus we had Mackerel, Wrasse, Pollack and Gar. On the day it was nerve wracking as it took nigh on 3 hours before we landed a fish, however it came good as we had a hectic last 40 minutes where we both got a Mullet each, a Mackerel and a Gar. Dick, deservedly so, got the first and the best so no doubt his mutt will be all over the screen. Look out for it end of this year or 2007 in the new series, there is some tremendous footage (not just Dick) of ........................................ well allsorts, watch it and see.

Our last trip was Sunday and we  were fortunate enough to get 25 Turbot and Brill. Very surprised at this time of year and we also organised ourselves for Bream but had to abort on the way out, best fish was only 6lb 8oz with a lot of small fish so lets hope that it is a good sign for next years sport. It seems the fishing this week died as the springs came on with less flats and more Bass but not in the numbers we normally experience. That'll do for now, lets hope the next update is a bit quicker, cheers.

17th July

Just a quick bit of news, it would appear that the Bass have moved in a lot closer around the island. Several good fish reported over the weekend. Firstly a group of lads were over from Exmouth and the weather put paid to them going out to sea so they went plugging. One guy had 8 (eight) hook ups and landed 4 fish. One of the ones he lost rolled on the rock in front of him and broke away, it was judged to be around 8lb. The other two lads had their share too but not 8! Chris Tett, skipper of Peace and Plenty, had the misfortune of falling off the side of the quay and broke his ankle (that's not the story, that's the lead in, commiserations Chris!!) so his crew for the day had a delayed start so they fished in the harbour with live eels. By the time Chris returned from the hospital ready to take them to sea the lads had landed 3 Bass all around 5lb and 6lb, that was around 10.00am. And then on Saturday night one of the local lads had an 8lb 5oz Bass from the shore in the harbour. So its all go here!

15th July

Left it a bit long for an update. Shore sport consisting of Pollack, Garfish and Mackerel to float and spinning with the Breakwater not fishing as it normally does. You'd be better of on the rock marks at the moment. There are a few Bass to plugs, try early morning or dusk for best results. No-one really fishing on the bottom seriously although one rod three nights ago managed Sole, Bass and Couches Sea Bream on Platte Saline. Couches was about a 1lb, the Bass and Sole 2lb a piece.

The boat fishing this week has consisted of better Bass in both numbers and quality. Turbot and Brill have been caught with varying success amongst the visiting fleet. That varying success seems very dependent on the anglers aboard. For the second successive Wednesday this week I was along several charter boats whereby the anglers simply weren't catching for whatever reason but we were doing really well. We managed 25 Bass this week in a couple of hours and yet only one or two boats got near that for the day! Other bits and bobs they've been getting includes Black bream to 4lb and on the rough stuff plenty of Bull Huss, a few Eels and a few Tope.

As I said I got out Wednesday, my brother over for a couple of days eager to catch some of the Bass and Turbot. Wednesday we had those Bass, the best went 8lb, a few Red Gurnards, Pollack and some nice sized ground Mackerel. Darren started feeling poorly so we opted for an early finish and off to a BBQ. On the Thursday we stayed closer to shore, plugging. Two bass and a Wrasse fell to my rod, best one went 4lb and then as the tide eased away we went looking for Darren's elusive Turbot. After a couple of hours we had missed four bites, I had a trace go as well(!), and I managed 3 nice Brill between 6lb and 8lb. That's the first time I have had three Brill. No Turbot showed so Darren will have to wait till next time.

7th July

End of the week now so how did it shape up? Shore sport it is hard to guage but it seems as if it is pretty much the same but in the boats there were some pleasant surprises. Certainly the flatfish seemed to come on again with the smaller tides. A private boat from Langstone found 16 fish to 17lb over two days and the visiting charter fleet on the days they tried the sandbanks found fish. Best flat was a 12lb Brill which went back as did a 14lb Bass. Having said the flats improved, the Bassing certainly wasn't good. Lots of Bream reported to 4lb and there seemed to be more than a few Tubs and Red Gurnards about. The Tope were slower than normal, but there were Bull Huss pulling the strings.

I had a trip out Wednesday, I followed on from what we were doing on Sunday trying to target the Ray. Went back to the same bank armed with quality bait and uptiders. Loads of fish..............Dogs and Pollack, I thought I was anchored in the Eastern Solent again!!! (Where I'm from for those that don't know!). The Ray didn't have a chance so we moved 400 yards to another fanciful looking bank. Great, no Pollack but still plenty of Dogfish. For a change boredom set in so we left early for home rather than try somewhere else, shame because the sea was like glass.

4th July

This is always good to see, the youngsters out there giving it a right go. Not perturbed by his previous session aboard Dick Smiths boat whereby loads of fish were dropped and loads of tackle lost wrecking, local lad Jake Woodnutt had another go Sunday and was well rewarded with this beautiful looking Cod at 16lb 5oz. Just reward me thinks for all the little lads effort. The other bit if good news for me was he still lost loads of tackle so I shall look forward to Dick topping up his tackle box!!

A few weeks ago I reported a 3lb 1oz Sole from Platte Saline caught by Matt Munro, here is the photo.

The weekend saw sport a little slower than one would have liked amongst the charter boats. Bass, Brill, Turbot, Tope and Bream all showed but not in any sort of numbers. One local boat went wrecking though and returned well satisfied with one Cod and a number Pollack and Ling.

Shore sport consisted of Pollack, gars, some Mackerel, plenty of Wrasse. The 'pluggers' are reporting Bass coming in a little  more regularly now but they are fisherman's stories! 'The big ones aren't taking, its only the small ones we're hooking up with!'

Fed up with the constant monotony of drifting and steaming and despite some really good catches of late I opted to do something a little more different, something that where I am from which happens more frequently. Fishing from a static boat, yep, we anchored all day! How relaxing. First mark was a piece of rough ground between Alderney and the French coast. Norman managed a very nice Bull Huss, 10lb 4oz, Dave latched in to a Tope, those were the fish of note, but there were Pollack and Bream there too and for the most part something was happening. Once we had the slack there we moved on to the banks closer to Alderney. The tide was a bit fierce but anchored nicely between two banks and the following few hours passed very nicely. Bites most of the time and we finished there with 2 Blonde Ray, 1 Brill and more Bream, Dogfish and Pollack.
