31st December Aha...........no reports for ages eh? I've been shirking. Lovely break over Christmas which somehow didn't involve too much fishing, put on a stone in weight and need help now when I get up!! Two blank trips is all I had, one for Mullet whereby they weren't there too catch and night before last I blanked squidding. I was well beaten by a 6 year old as young Zac kept swinging them in!! There has been fish caught though, mainly Bass to worm baits, the odd Smoothound but in all truthfulness not too many rod hours have been put in. Anyway, tomorrow onwards I reckon I'll be out most nights, good tides on a good forecast so we'll see how we do. In the meantime wishing you all, customers or not, a Happy New Year and a prosperous 2011 from Fieona and I, thanks for all your support and help through 2010. 11th December Fishing is hit and miss at the moment, one moment some good bags of Bass to 5lb whereby you are landing 10 plus fish and then they're gone. Also some Red Mullet, the odd Sole still being caught and Smooth hounds showing on most marks. More would be caught if more anglers used crab for bait. Plenty of squid down the quay at the moment. I've managed a few sessions since the last write up, the best was a session down the Volta whereby we had plenty of the vermin of Dogfish, Pout and Poor Cod but also managed Bass, Smuts, Sole, Bream and a Dragonet which I never caught! Wish I had. A group of lads staying with us managed a good session on the Bream with a lot of fish between 2lb and 3lb. Also in to darkness several Huss including a couple of doubles plus some Bass. Back on the quay a couple of small Codling caught. I've updated some of the Braid and Line section of the site with some braid and line from Ultima, take a peek here: http://www.alderneyangling.com/braid_and_line.htm 7th December Good tides, good forecast and woke up early so couldn't resist it could I? 5.00am I'm perched on a lovely little rock mark for some easy fishing. Got my rewards with another species for my annual count, a nice little Small Eyed Ray. Target achieved off to work! 6th December ................species number 40 for the year........a 2lb 8oz Sole! I had a good session last night, in amongst a dozen or so Pout I had a couple of Bream, a Pollack, 4 Bass to over 3lb and the Sole. Other lads were out, not sure yet what was caught though. The lads staying with us had some Bream, was a bit quiet for them. On the quay there were Pollack to 4lb, small Coalfish and Squid. 5th December Kayak session today with Dick Smith, plugging for Bass. Not frenetic but we didn't get the best of the tide as we had to return early due to my 'near miss sinking!'. Found a split/crack where the mirage drive sits, oh dear, not good. Fishing wise I had one Bass, dropped two around 5lb a piece due to my inability to correctly use a landing net, well the first time it never got used, the second one I managed to flip the Bass out as opposed to in when the plug got caught in the mesh which is why I tend to drag them in which was the result of the first dropped fish!! Haha!! A couple of small Pollack and a dropped Gar and it was an ok session till I found I was full of water, not good. Birthday boy Smithy though had a cracker, one reasonable sized Bass, a couple of dropped fish and a stonking Pollack, 11lb 14oz!! It must be a birthday with a zero in for it to be so special!! He don't look that old does he? I got sent another picture of Nigel's Lumpsucker, someone used a flash on this one. Also the lads staying with us managed half a dozen Mullet today to 4lb this morning. Another visiting angler managed a few too elsewhere plus a Coalfish. 4th December..............bit more Sneaked out his afternoon just because I fancied fishing, don't do that often enough. I was rewarded with a Plaice, only small but few are seen here PLUS it was my 39th sea species for the year, wonder what will be the 40th!! 4th December Clear of snow and ice now, YIPPEE, wind and rain in stead! Balmy temperatures of 8 degrees though, happy days. One or two bits around as you would expect. Our lads arrived from Plymouth after a two day wait at the airport. I prayed they'd go out and load up with fish but just a few Bream for their efforts. Plenty of squid on the quay attracting a few rods and jigs. The big surprise was an Alderney record broken for a Lumpsucker of 5lb 14oz to none other than Nigel Bowditch. He spotted the fish mooching around the surface all perplexed at the jigs being aimed at it. Nigel then tried a jelly worm but that never worked neither, then he took the jelly worm off the jig head and baited it with worm, well you've never seen a Lumpsucker move so fast as it nailed the worm. Luckily the islands fish recorder was there to witness it all, a quick drive up to home like Lewis Hamilton to get the official scales and it was returned alive after it was weighed, tremendous! 2nd December As promised here are a few Scotland holiday photos. In sequence you'll see mopey Benji, not a good traveler when the boat is on the move. Fieona is getting prepared after her first Skate run with 'Mopey' now taking an interest, it follows through to when it is landed and measured at 109lb. Then we get a double at 165lb and 160lb (yes I know Fie's look bigger but it wasn't!!). Then the last Skate is 157lb. The rest are Rainbows with my one pushed out to the camera, my first Loch caught Spur which was very small despite having them to around 7lb 8oz, a small Thornie again the first one and my first ever Grey Gurnard. Weather not too bad here, overnight snow but nothing massive. Have some lads waiting to get out but stuck at Southampton Airport. 1st December Aha...................it's been a while since the last update, mainly due to being away on holiday which causes lots of being busy on the return especially pre Xmas when all you good folk are shopping with us, all good stuff. Our holiday was 'local' this year, no planes or airport traffic to anywhere exotic, we went to bonnie Scotland. We spent a lot of time in and around Loch Awe, wonderful place for being secluded with fantastic scenery which is so varied within an hours drive depending which direction you travel and of course spectacular wildlife. We did a wee bit of fishing whilst there. We managed a days skate fishing with the legendary Ronnie Campbell on his 105 Laura Dawn. Fieona and I managed two a piece with fish of 109lb, 157lb, 160lb and 165lb. Fieona wanted to learn how to cast a fly so we took a lesson with the guys at Inverawe on one of their well stocked ponds. I spent more time in the field behind me and at one time I thought the guide was going to give up with me but I got there in the end. Fieona was typically quite elegant and dare I say very good at it. However we again finished equal with two Rainbows a piece but Fie had a cracker at 3lb plus. The other bit of fishing we did was a self drive on Loch Etive. Doug Bannatyne runs a fleet of 5 16 footers in the well sheltered Loch and in a days fishing we had a dozen or more Spurdogs to 7lb 8oz, 5 Thornbacks, Pollack, Pout, Whiting and after two hours of targeting one I managed a Grey Gurnard, my first ever! I'll get some photo's up later. Back home here in Alderney I have had reports of Bream, Bass, the odd Sole and some Red Mullet. I went last Friday and Monday. Monday was only for a couple of hours and other than Pout is was poor, on the Friday it was far better with a couple of Bass, a couple of Bream, missed bites and too many Pout. Nigel managed much the same plus a Mullet. Lots of Mullet starting to show with fish jumping on the familiar marks, fish to 6lb 8oz have been caught. Looking forward to these next set of tides with dark nights and anticipate some really good fishing. Below is Jansen Teakle of Veals Mail Order with a 11lb plus Smoothound from his recent visit to Alderney. In the quarry for the Carp not too many people fishing but Neville Martin managed one session with 3 small Carp before this cold weather came in. Of which yes we have our fair share too, its not sunny Alderney as some of you might think. Icey winds and a fair whack of snow and ice but nowhere as bad as some of you out there! Hope it clears up soon for those of you marooned. Lots of stock arriving so if you need a quote to any of the new stuff arriving on the market and not seen it on the website then give us a call. Things that spring to mind is Daiwa's new Millionaire and the new ABU TDSR's.
More pictures from session for the Carp in the quarry, Nigel and myself getting in amongst the action trying to stop Two Trout Butel grabbing them all!!
8th November We had our first session in the carp lake on Saturday. Remember that 1205 Carp were put in so it should be a piece of cake to catch one eh? Between the three of us we didn't connect with any likely Carp, complete failure but we did see them swimming around the margins. However we never blanked (Gary did though!!), we caught 3 Brown Trout to 2lb 8oz, gobsmacked. Obviously these have been in here for some time minding there own business till now. It also opens up the ideas on fly fishing and spinning for them now we are allowed to fish in the quarry. Having said all this four carp have been caught, Nigel Bowditch managed two sessions with two fish in each session as well as a couple of Brownies too. In the salty stuff as I said before fishing hasn't been frantic but there has been Mullet to 5lb, Eels to just under 20lb, Black Bream to 2lb 10oz on the float, Bass to 5lb (but you were right, they seem thin on the ground), Red Mullet, Giltheads, Couches, Sole and a solitary Starry Smoothound of 11lb 3oz. Photos blow of Alderney Press owner Norman Butel: 5th November With improving tides over the weekend the fishing although not frenetic isn't too bad. Bream and Mullet around in moderate numbers with fish found on bottom baits and float in several marks. Best Bream 2lb 7oz and the Mullet to 4lb. Windy and swelly conditions making choosing fishing marks difficult but sticking a worm bait on the bottom is probably your best chance of success and an easy session. One session last night for a small group of us produced sole to 3lb 4oz (Clive Hodges with a PB pictured below), Red Mullet to 2lb and Bass to nearly 3lb. Better Bass elsewhere in better numbers too on the low tide rock marks. Please note the Mail Order offer above has been extended to include two other offers. Also check out the Bayzand Mail Order page, new range of colours in Leaded Lightning Twintails including a Rhubarb and Custard which will prove to be a winner. 6" Twintails are all back in stock including the Orange Tiger. 2nd November The Carp have arrived!! I have to say it is pretty impressive, some really good quality fish and sooo pretty too! Pictures 1 and 2 see the fish in four tanks on the trailer and back of the wagon. We were amazed the 1205 fish were in something so small but this is the way it is done. They are monitored every two hours to ensure that each tank has enough oxygen in and despite how it appeared to us mere mortals not one fish were lost. The company that Jonathan Gates (owner of this fantastic project) bought the fish from is based in Devon, they're called South West Carp Sales headed up by Phil and Geraldine. They supply really good quality Carp renowned for their fighting abilities above other Carp, well researched Jon! So the journey started at 5.00am with the fish loaded the previous night, and off to Poole to catch the freight boat. A smooth crossing ensued, very lucky with the weather cos its blowing again today, and a 9 hour crossing saw them arrive around 7.30pm last night. Craned off the boat and then the final journey to the quarry. Picture 3 and 4 see the tops opened up. The 5 biggies between 16lb and 19lb 8oz, were in a small tank of their own. Pictures taken they were transported down to their new home. Picture 5 sees Phil release the first Mirror. In 6 and 7 Gary Maurice releasing one of the bigger Commons (he had too because other than landing mine he probably won't get to see another!). Once the biggies were done it was then as quick as we could with the rest. We had a bank to run down and 200 yards to cover so with two weigh slings on the go, zipped up as best we could at the sides, we spent the next hour transporting the fish to the quarry. Picture 8 sees Marcus Odoli gawping and weighing one or two up for lunch, it did need explaining that this was catch and RELEASE, not eat all you can! The quarry itself has three ledges with 28' depth in the centre. The first ledge is easily accessible and 'swims' will be made obvious very soon. This morning we could see Carp all through the reeds and up on the shallows looking rather pleased with themselves, well they would wouldn't they, it turned out the water was warmer than where they just came from! Phil took a temperature of 15 degrees, 5 more than back in the UK. Oxygen was 73% too which Phil says is brilliant. He was also very impressed with the quarry itself, with the amount of food the Carp had to gorge themselves on and firmly believes that the growth will be quicker than that of back in the UK so within two to three years the 5/6lb fish that have gone in will be double figures. The late teens that are there will next year almost certainly be twenties! The crucial bit, day tickets are available at just £5 with an annual membership at just £100.
1st November Good tides coming up and news of plenty of wind..........................typical. still I am sure the fishing will be good. It has gone a little quiet but not overly worried. I have had a batch of Savage Gear Bushwhackers arrived. We have stocked them for a while but they have never made the site. They're a great rod for plugging and for drop shot or vertical jigging. I have the 8' 6" 20-60g for my shadding and heavier plugging and find it terrific to use. As a treat for Christmas we're offering FREE P&P to Channel Islands and UK on this terrifically priced rod. Go to this page for more details Bushwhacker 29th October Monday is the day that the Carp arrive for Alderneys new coarse fishery at Corbletts quarry. Pictured below is the best of the 1000 fish to arrive. These ones weigh between 16lb 8oz and 19lb 8oz and as you can see are a mix of Commons and Mirrors. Lots of effort has gone in by Jonathan Gates and he is to be congratulated for his commitment in trying to provide an alternative fishing experience for the people of Alderney and of course the many visitors. Fishing commences on Sunday 7th November! 26th October A quick session for me last night produced a few Bream for tea, a tasty Tub Gurnard plus Pout and Rockling. Elsewhere amongst the hoardes of Pout there were Dab (another!), some Bass and a solitary eels whilst a couple of lads tried for Ray. I've just unloaded my camera and found these pictures of Robbo whom I fish the festival with each year. For those that know him you'll find them amusing. Note the dinners Fieona delivered out to us while we were fishing. That was a Pork Burgundy delivered on proper plates! We also had Korma at the Volta and Beef Hot Pot at Tchue. now he' has gone it is back to beans and mash!
25th October We've just taken delivery of some Shimano special offers. The first is a Titanos 4500. Limited stock at £69.99 each, RRP is £114.99! Free delivery when you take two or more, subject to VAT for UK customers. Call us on 01481 824884 or email mark@alderneyangling.com. More offers to follow. 24th October A long time has passed since the last report, I've been away at tradeshows and now trying to get website and shop improved for Christmas, need more time for fishing that's for sure. The week after the festival the fishing was as good with a fair bit of Sole landed with several fish to over 4lb. Red Mullet seemed to be increasing in numbers too and Couches showed better than they have been. One of the better catches was made by Nigel Bowditch, one three hour session accounted for 2 Codling, 2 Red Mullet, 6 Couches to 1lb 10oz and 6 Bass to 4lb 10oz ....... cracking session. As we came out of that week the fishing dropped away unfortunately for one reason or another. Currently there are Bream to over 3lb on the float, one or two Mullet to 4lb 8oz and Bass falling to plugs and worm. Norman Butel from the Alderney Press very kindly supplied this link with the photographs of some of the fish weighed in during the Festival https://cid-ef6210f07b53ce96.photos.live.com/play.aspx/Alderney%20report/DSC%5E_0112.JPG?Bsrc=Photomail&Bpub=SDX.Photos You may have to sign in.
Very shortly Alderney will have its own Coarse Fishery. On November 1st is a delivery of Mirror and Common Carp with approximately 1000 fish to be put in to Corbletts Quarry. The quarry is an ideal environment for the fish to grow, mature and breed. It is sheltered too form all sides by adverse weather conditions, full of weed and shrimp for food and shelter. Jonathan Gates has invested time and money into this project and we are only too pleased to help and support him in this project. The fishery opens on 7th November and day tickets are available form just £5. Season tickets available to from the shop. It is barbless hooks only and unhooking mats are required. Looking ahead more species of fish will be added. 10th October Its been a great week for fishing with one of the best finished boards for three years. Even the Sole/Plaice category filled up which is unusual. Personally I had the best fishing in four years but only managed one on the board, that's just the way it goes. Matt Pitter finished with 16 species throughout the week which from the shore is simply fantastic fishing. It was good to see so many quality fish right through the range of species as you can see from the results published below. Many thanks to the 104 that turned up, we know you had a good time and thanks for supporting the festival year in year out, its not a cheap one but your support is truly appreciated. Many thanks too from Fieona and I at the shop for supporting us so well. Also the Festival doesn't work without the financial or physical support of our sponsors so many thanks to them for their help. 7th October Away from the Festival for a mo, the NEW Penn 515 MAG2 and PENN 525 MAG2 have just arrived!! They look and feel absolutely fabulous. Festival...........a new Alderney Record was made last night for a Twaite Shad caught by Jersey lad Danny LeMerrer. It went 1lb 2oz 6 dram. Danny yet again has fished incredibly long hours and thoroughly deserves it. Danny........I still want your laugh for a ring tone!! The board is looking rather impressive, possibly the best in three years now. Not a good day/night yesterday for baits on the bottom, however it was good for Ballan Wrasse and Bass as those categories started to fill. Garfish of 1lb 4o got that section underway and the Thick Lipped Mullet as always continually added as fish within just a few ounces get added to the board. A surprise Pout of nigh on 2lb added to the under 5lb category adds a bit of vermin variety. Couches Bream entered too and a bit like the Mullet category fish are added to the board whereby an ounce or two is enough or sometimes its not, very close. Its now nearing the end, where has the week gone? Steve Harder from Southampton has managed an incredible 5 fish on the board, not often that happens. Still got 28 hours to go. We had a poor day, we stuck on one mark and managed Black Bream, Pout and Wrasse. Robbo lost a good fish in the swell, where the fish (probably a large Huss) got its head down and the trace chaffed on a rock. Several ledges just in front of us and at this point for an hour the swell was large. Shame for Robbo. ALDERNEY ANGLING FESTIVAL 2010 BOARD

THREE BEARDED ROCKLING -
6th October Updated board below, no massive changes, 5th place on the Black Bream increased by drams, another Golden Grey has sneaked in (but not beat my doggie, phew!) and a 2lb 14oz Plaice added. My fishing prediction of improved catches have proved unfounded. Plenty of weed turning up on the beaches making some venues impossible to fish and then on top of that some huge swells have made fishing on the breakwater and rock marks very difficult if not impossible and unsafe to do so. Improved tonight though so maybe we can take advantage of the better tides. I'm in early tonight as I couldn't get on my chosen rock mark, got beaten to it. I'll have a bigger day of it tomorrow. Today we found the fishing slow for the first time this week, plugging we had no joy. Had a few Bream during the day I managed to drop a cracking fish, the hook hold gave out. Too many Pout on a night mark didn't give the target species chance. I did manage though my first Alderney Dab last night in amongst a catch of bits and my fishing partner Robbo had a Plaice, its like being back at home! By the way the gaff is coming with us everywhere now! 5th October Nearly half way now and the board is filling up. some good fishing being experienced but most anglers. Couches and Wrasse categories have had their first entries. The Couches has taken a while as there have been quite a few caught. I have heard of three anglers with fish of 1lb 3oz which just misses the qualifying weight of 1lb 4oz. Black Bream you now need a fish of 3lb 4oz to get on there, Mullet board filled so a fish of around four and a half pounds will be required. A cracking double figure Polack has been added. One angler has four fish on the board, one team of four has managed 8! Best tides to come and a reasonable forecast so looking good for twists and turns yet. Our own fishing yesterday saw us do the one long session on the same mark which saw us catch Bass to 3lb, Pollack to 3lb, Bream to 2lb 4oz, Pout, Dogs, Poor Cod and I lost a qualifying eel in the swell which was on Bream gear, No gaff and a sloping rock made landing very awkward but we had a net. 8 or 9 attempts at it before the hook straightened, how frustrating. Will I go with out a gaff again, will I heck like! Numpty!!
4th October Ages since last update, busy, busy, busy. Although I never gave it a lead in on this page the Festival is well and truly underway. It started Saturday midday and finishes this coming Saturday midday. Short for time so I assume you are a regular follower of these pages and not explain the format but if you look back on previous Octobers reports you'll see it. The fishing has been good, we're on small tides so as the tides increase fishing should improve even more so. Current board is below which I will keep updated from now even if I don't write up. Remember each fish has a high qualifying weight to get on the board in the first place. The surprise is the turn up of Bream suddenly with some cracking fish caught. Many other species landed and not qualified, my own fishing has resulted in Coalfish, Blonde Ray and Smoothound not being legible, great fishing though! I am responsible for the dogfish :-). Weather the weekend was appalling, rain lashing down helped by plenty of wind. Nicer last night and with a moderate forecast fishing will be good.
